Telecalculograph Furnace
This is the furnace portion of my steampunk PC, the Telecalculograph. The color of the “fire” is a little off in the video, in real life it is a more homogenous orange. While I came up with the furnace idea, the basic circuit and software design were by Ryan Myers. His website on the subject is here: casemods.pointofnoreturn.org Thanks for watching!

Very very nice! :)
January 26th, 2012 at 9:47 am
Yes. Well, there’s one woman too.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:32 am
Are there little men in there with coal shovels?
January 26th, 2012 at 10:38 am
For the drive LEDs, something to taper the lighting and extinguishing would be nice, so it isn’t so abrupt.
I love the load indicator. Did you just hook the 8 LEDs to the data lines? (I’ve pondered a number of novel uses for the parallel port as an annunciator array.)
Rigging a little whistle to be triggered by the system beep call would be amusing.

ambitious with such cool, or should I say quite hot, results
January 26th, 2012 at 11:49 am
Very cool! I’d like to see the rest of your “Victorian Era” PC, if you could please!
January 26th, 2012 at 12:15 pm
fricking awesome……….and yes, now I want one
January 26th, 2012 at 12:58 pm
That is brilliant. It’s kinda funny how the best steampunk objects are being made by people with the most computer savvy.
January 26th, 2012 at 1:34 pm
I love it! Wonderful work!
January 26th, 2012 at 2:01 pm
Cool. And I agree, would like to see more.
“a feedback mechanism that blows more air into the furnace”
That’s actually correct, a steam locomotive uses the exhaust steam that goes through the stack from the cylinders to create a draft, drawing more air through the fire. The harder the engine works the stronger the draft and the hotter the fire.

what does the whole computer look like?
January 26th, 2012 at 2:34 pm
you should round the end of the slots, would give it a more “Old” look
January 26th, 2012 at 3:20 pm
Maker sure that you don’t pan out and show the entire case, that would be a little too interesting. Joker!
January 26th, 2012 at 3:50 pm
Neat work fella.
January 26th, 2012 at 3:53 pm
Now THAT is schweet. Steampunk FTW!
January 26th, 2012 at 4:48 pm

Thanks for sharing, Jacob! You make nerdy stuff look slightly less nerdy. :-)
Have you seen the magic that is Ned & Sunshine? We might have a part for you when and if you come down to the LP next month.

Sounds like a good application for Di-NOC Film…
January 26th, 2012 at 7:14 pm
all the haters, dont you realise you can paint your drives in blue, red or green as well? do those come for 20$ in the market? i dont think so.
if you dont know how to appreciate someones hard work, dont ruin it.
And try going outside, maybe you will get a little inspiration and get more creative.
January 26th, 2012 at 7:55 pm
Wow. So instead of painting my case beige I could have just done the dvd drive :O. *Palms face*
January 26th, 2012 at 8:00 pm
Beige cases reminds me of a time when computers had turbo buttons.
January 26th, 2012 at 8:51 pm
loser
January 26th, 2012 at 9:20 pm
If I would, I’d paint all my new drives beige. Black is just too depressing of a color, but beige is peaceful and calm looking — And it makes your full tower cases look bigger! ;-)
If you think beige computers look ugly and boring, then black painted ones are worse!
January 26th, 2012 at 10:16 pm
I have done that a few times and when I build my Mountaindew case I also panted the drives to match the case it would have been wired to have a green MD case that had a black white bage or anyother collor drive in it.

Just one hint that I found that is good to when covering the light lite, you can use a product called Simply Tacky found at your local craft stores. Just stick it on there and let it dry and take it back off. Works great for me. Leave Bill alone he’s just trying to cover all the modding basics. Great Job Bill, keep up the good work.
